Press release – International Project for Temelin
Date: 30. 4. 2010
On the basis of investor’s requests of March 11, 2010, International MIR.1200 Consortium, led by ŠKODA JS, elaborated a document containing basic specification of solutions concerning fifty key spheres that were divided into four chapters. The document has been submitted to the representatives of CEZ.
An international team consisting of more than 90 technicians, designers and economists from ŠKODA JS, Atomstroyexport, Gidropress and other engineering, scientific- technical institutions from mainly the Czech Republic and Russian Federation, worked on elaboration of the document.
The Consortium offers construction of nuclear units according to European project MIR.1200 that is based on the design of VVER-type light-water reactors. Up to the present day, the experience in successful operation of VVER technology in nuclear power plants has already exceeded 1400 reactor years.
MIR (Modernized International Reactor) is an example of cooperation stemming from a long-term partnership of Czech, European and other international companies. Within the bid, special attention is paid to ensure that at least 70% of supplies of equipment, work and services come from the Czech Republic. Yet within the frame of qualification preparation, the Consortium concluded preliminary agreements with more than 20 noted Czech and European companies.
The construction and operation of the Dukovany nuclear power plant, celebrating the 25th anniversary of its safe and effective operation these days, is a great example of cooperation of professionals nowadays represented by Consortium MIR.1200. As Mr. Tomáš Žák, the director of Dukovany NPP, said in this respect, the four units of Dukovany NPP should transmit electrical power to the power network for another 35 years. Mr. Žák also said that, as regards possible construction of the fifth unit, CEZ should make its decision within two years. Since its commissioning in 1985, Dukovany NPP has become the biggest and cheapest producer of Czech electrical power. Over the past few years, Dukovany NPP has been covering one fifth of domestic consumption.
Nuclear power plants equipped with VVER reactors have also been constructed in Slovakia, Finland, Hungary and other European countries. The MIR.1200 project complies with customer’s requirements and the technology the customer already uses, the basic equipment and fuel have been verified and successfully operated on a long-term basis in the past. The offered project complies with international standards and recommendations of International Atomic Energy Agency and places great emphasis on safety and technological-economic parameters.
In the Russian Federation, on the basis of the same technology analogous units are being constructed at the Leningrad, Novovoronezh and Baltic nuclear power plants. At present, negotiations on construction of 4 units according to the MIR.1200 design are being conducted in Turkey.
