Press Release - International Consortium led by ŠKODA JS
Date: 23. 2. 2010
ČEZ confirms compliance of European MIR.1200 design with qualification requirements
ŠKODA JS a.s. appreciates the announcement of the electricity producer ČEZ, from which it results that the International Consortium led by ŠKODA JS succeeded in the qualification procedure within the tender for completion of Units 3 and 4 of the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant.
The Consortium comprising of ŠKODA JS a.s., ATOMSTROJEXPORT and OKB GIDROPRESS offers European design MIR.1200, which is based on VVER-type light water reactors. Up to the present day, the experience in successful operation of VVER reactors at nuclear power plants has already exceeded 1400 reactor years.
In the past, nuclear power plants equipped with VVER-type reactors were built in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Finland, Hungary and other European countries. Design MIR.1200 complies with the customer’s requirements and the technology the customer already uses, basic equipment as well as fuel were successfully applied in the past. The design also complies with international standards and recommendations of International Atomic Energy Agency and places great emphasis on safety and technical-economic parameters.
In the Russian Federation, on the basis of the same technology analogous units are being constructed at the Leningrad, Novovoronezh and Baltic Nuclear Power Plants. At present, negotiations on construction of 4 units according to the MIR.1200 design are being conducted in Turkey and the same design is being assessed in Finland.
At the same time, MIR (Modernized International Reactor) is an example of cooperation, which stems from a long-term partnership of Czech, European and other international companies. Within the bid, special attention is paid to ensure that at least 70% of supplies of equipment, work and services are executed in the Czech Republic. Yet within the frame of qualification preparation, the Consortium concluded preliminary agreements with more than 20 noted Czech and European companies.
Information
On August 3, 2009 ČEZ announced a tender for completion of Units 3 and 4 of the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant, with an option for construction of further three units in European countries.
On October 14, 2009 a tripartite agreement on establishment of the International Consortium was concluded.
In November 2009, further negotiations on possible cooperation in third countries were conducted in Prague between ATOMSTROJEXPORT and Czech, or more precisely Slovak, companies.
ŠKODA JS a.s.– is one of the leading engineering and production companies with worldwide experience in construction and service of nuclear power plants. Škoda was established in 1859, and the origins of its activities in nuclear power industry fall in 1956. Throughout the period of its existence, the company has supplied engineering, equipment and service for nuclear power plants, research reactors and spent fuel storage facilities in Central and Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, France, Germany, USA and the Far East. Up to the present day, ŠKODA JS has produced and supplied 21 complete nuclear reactors of the VVER 440 type and 3 reactors of the VVER 1000 type.
ATOMSTRОJEXPORT– is a leading Russian state-owned engineering company, which implements interstate and business contracts on construction of nuclear power facilities abroad. At present, ASE performs contracts amounting to approximately 20% of the competitive world market volume. ASE is one of the largest suppliers of Russian highly demanding technologies to foreign countries. Upon its operation, the company profits from half-a-century experience of the Russian nuclear power industry and constructs new-generation nuclear power pants fully complying with international requirements and recommendation of International Atomic Energy Agency.
OKB GIDROPRESS – implements complex design activities, calculations, theoretical and experimental research for implementation of nuclear power units (nuclear systems for steam supply) and production of equipment for nuclear power plants, based on the VVER technology, which are characterized by increased safety, reliability, efficiency and competitiveness both in the Russian Federation and abroad.
