Flange joint gaskets

Flexible (expanded) graphite is suitable especially for fabrication of special gaskets. This material is environment friendly, well thermally and electrically conductive, applicable for high temperatures, resistant to most chemicals and has excellent selflubricating properties. Flexible graphite is a modified granulation product made of natural graphite (up to 300 times enlarged volume) which is subsequently treated into semiproducts such as tapes, plates and also braided cords of square cross-section. These semi-products are then used for fabrication of gaskets of required kinds which successfully replace and overcome classical gaskets (asbestos, metal, etc.).

Graphite gaskets do not damage sealing areas and thanks to high graphite elasticity there are lower requirements on tightening moments of bolts (50%). Application of this graphite in fittings seals, where concurrently with tightness increase the life of both spindles and seals extends, seal height and shearing forces are reduced and demands to maintenance are getting lower, is of a great convenience.

Manufacture of various kinds of purely graphite packing rings for flange joints and fittings seals has been set up in ŠKODA JS. The offer also includes reinforced variants protected as an industrial model.

It is now possible to ensure a complex solution of flange joints with flexible graphite gaskets including examination of operating regimes (proposal, calculations and design), and optionally also models verifications in testing room. Verification of graphite gaskets function can be tested on pressure-water test equipment at working conditions up to pressure of 20 MPa and temperature of 330°C, cold pressure tests up to 30 MPa.

ŠKODA JS can produce and supply graphite gaskets fulfilling all requirements on quality for nuclear power plants but also for other areas of energetic and chemical industry. Gaskets are supplied together with a product quality certificate including documentation on quality of semi-products, and optionally the assembly instructions. So far, several tens of thousands of gaskets of the given type have been manufactured.
