Reactor main flange joint stud tensioner

Stud tensioners are used for tightening and loosening of reactor flange joints. In the period elapsed, in cooperation with a foreign partner, ŠKODA JS completed production, final assembly and testing of a reactor main flange joint stud tensioner designed for VVER 440-type reactors of Dukovany NPP. Further contracts resulted in the supply of analogous equipment for Slovak nuclear units in 2009. Based on the customer’s request, the equipment enables its transport between Mochovce and Bohunice NPP.  

In the course of implementation of the tensioner for Slovak nuclear units, ŠKODA JS concluded another significant contract for supply of certain parts of the reactor pressure vessels main flange joint stud tensioner for Temelín NPP (2 x VVER 1000). All the above tensioning units enable simultaneous servicing of all main flange joint studs per one clamping.

Smaller tensioning units

Smaller tensioning units are designed for servicing of drives and nozzles of the reactor head upper block. Until now, flange joints have been tensioned manually by means of torque wrenches. For VVER 440 and 1000-type reactors, ŠKODA JS offers a new electronically controlled tensioning unit. For the VVER 440-type reactor, a new tensioner was developed and manufactured for tensioning of position indicator/CRDM-type flange joint and CRDM/HRK shroud-type joint. One set of the equipment was supplied to Loviisa NPP in Finland in 2003.

For VVER 1000-type reactors, according to the original design, combined equipment was supplied for both tensioning and loosening of  flange joints of reactor head nozzles for thermocouple channels, flange joints of neutron flux measurement channels and linear stepper drive shrouds. ŠKODA JS designed a modernized version of such equipment and offers its supply to all nuclear power plants with VVER 1000-type reactors.

Within the frame of the above mentioned modernization, the universal tensioner of flange joints was replaced with two special tensioning units equipped with modern technology. These are a tensioner of flange joint nuts of TK, KNI and LKP shrouds and a torque tensioner of TK flange joints thrust screws. Verification of functionality of the above tensioning units was successfully implemented on 61 joints of reactor head nozzles of Temelín NPP, Unit 1.
