Compact Spent Fuel Storage Racks for VVER 440 and VVER 1000 units
The fuel racks design enables to store fuel assemblies (also leaked, protected by a leak-proof can) or control rod clusters in special jackets. Thanks to the new ŠKODA JS design the storage capacity of fuel racks for VVER 1000 reactor has increased 1.85 times (680 positions for fuel assemblies and 25 positions for hermetic cans) which enables to the plant operator to store fuel in fuel racks for 9 years with three years long fuel cycle with maintaining a reserve for emergency unloading of the complete core.
High density spent fuel racks made by ŠKODA JS enable an additional installation at already operating nuclear power plants. They are installed into the existing storage pools located close to the reactor in the reactor hall. ŠKODA fuel racks comply with all requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for wet storage of spent fuel in the reactor hall. Over the last years, the racks have been supplied to VVER 440 and VVER 1000 units in the Czech Dukovany and Temelin NPPs, Slovak Mochovce NPP and to Rovno, Khmelnitski and Zaporozhe NPPs in the Ukraine.

ŠKODA JS also launched a new stage in the area of manufacture of high density storage racks. In cooperation with a partner engineering organisation ŠKODA JS won in a tender for the supplies of external high density storage racks for German nuclear power plant Obrigheim. The company managed demanding technology of welding of borated stainless steel sheets which is the base material for construction of racks.
The supply of racks for Obrigheim NPP is not the first project of type PWR fuel storage for ŠKODA JS. The previous project was concerned with a supply of seven sections of high density spent fuel storage racks for Kori 3 NPP in the Republic of Korea. Another type of reference are racks for MOX fresh fuel which were delivered to German Gundremmingen NPP in 2003.
